Modern High-End Valve Amplifiers based on Toroidal Output Transformers
Ir. Menno van der Veen
Toroidal output transformers for tube amplifiers, wound in Belgrade under licence from the Dutch specialist.

After more than a year of development, fine-tuning and testing, we are proud to manufacture the renowned toroidal output transformers for tube amplifiers designed by Menno van der Veen. The range covers the Push-Pull, Specialist and Single Ended series.
Van der Veen began developing high-end toroidal transformers for audio signals in 1983, especially for amplifiers using electron tubes. Many years of research and production have resulted in a wide range of models.
The tables list the main parameters; download the PDF for full details of each model. Prices are in euros.
In 2013 Menno van der Veen gave a lecture in Belgrade entitled ‘Toroidal output transformers for tube audio: advantages and disadvantages’.

He built his first tube amplifier at the age of twelve, and audio and electron tubes have remained the main theme of his career. He studied applied physics, taught physics and co-founded the Christian Teacher Training College in Zwolle (the Netherlands), which later became Windesheim University.
At around forty he left teaching and set up his own engineering company. He devoted himself to developing toroidal output transformers with a very wide frequency range, which were manufactured in Canada and England. He wrote the book ‘Modern High-End Valve Amplifiers based on Toroidal Output Transformers’, published by Elektor and translated into four languages, in which the circuit later known as the ‘Super-Triode’ was born.
He has published more than 360 articles on the theme ‘Do we measure what we hear?’ He worked closely with the Canadian company Plitron, where he researched the transmission of clean electrical power under the sponsorship of the Canadian government, and developed a transformer technology patented as ‘narrow-band technology’.
He is chairman of the Dutch section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the AES. Parts of his research have also been published by the Dutch Acoustical Society (NAG).
Since 2004 he has worked on guitar tube amplifiers and developed a series of affordable EI transformers with excellent characteristics. In 2006 he founded the ‘Tube Society’ academy, where students learn to design and build tube amplifiers. He runs master classes with Elektor and is one of the editors of the annual ‘Elektor Audio Special’.
With the author’s kind permission, we publish translations of the most interesting chapters of his books so that tube amplifier enthusiasts and home builders can deepen their knowledge. The books are published in English by Elektor; our translated chapters are in Serbian and Russian.
